The skills you really need to get a cloud computing job

There is no doubt that cloud computing is very much the future, with services taking a prominent place in the market. There are a huge number of companies who wish to make the transition to using cloud services, however a challenge that they face is the fact that there just aren’t enough people who have knowledge of the service to the extent required for available job roles. This means that those who have the training to thrive in such a job are being enticed by very competitive salaries. If you like the sound of this, and have an interest in the industry, then you may well wish to consider a career change that would allow you to work in cloud computing. There are however some key skills that you will need that will help to increase your chances of securing a role, and we have put together a list of some of those skills.

AWS certification

This is a simple qualification, but it is enough to show companies that you have some form of training in the industry, and that you have knowledge about cloud technology – which is exactly what they are looking for. If you’re looking for a job as a developer then this is a good place to start, and you can expect a salary of at least £80,000 in this role. The qualification will stand out on your CV, and prove right away that you have industry knowledge.

Serverless Computing Experience

There aren’t currently many people who specialise in serverless computing, so if this is something that you can put on your CV, you are sure to grab the attention of the company you’re applying to. There is no need to attend a formal course for this, as there is plenty of information available on the internet, including videos that you can watch. This will help you to get the knowledge needed to stand out from any other applicants who may be interested in the role. Of course, if you would prefer to learn formally, you have the option.

Internet of Things knowledge

There aren’t many people who know very much about internet of things – which is an issue for companies, as it is an area that is constantly being developed. If you can show that you have a specialism in this area, you are certain to stand out from other applicants, and this makes it more likely that you will secure the role that you want. There are a couple of industries that are particularly interested in this skill, including the pharmaceuticals industry – who are keen to develop wearable products that can continuously monitor the patients under their care. There are also job openings in the self-driving car industry amongst others, so there are a few areas of interest that will be covered. If you manage to secure a role as an internet of things engineer, you can expect to be earning at least £150,000, which shows that it is well worth training up on if you have an interest in the area.

Database knowledge

Cloud computing involves dealing with high volumes of information, and this means that a knowledge of databases and how to use them is important. You should understand the various languages and systems, and be able to adapt quickly to whichever system you might be faced with. Companies want to hire individuals who can simply click into the right mindset and start working right away, and if you already have the knowledge of how databases work, you’re already well on your way.

System Automation

Thanks to the fact that companies are using so much information, and are having to find a way to store it, it often isn’t realistic to work with it manually. For this reason, to secure a role in cloud computing it can be beneficial if you have knowledge about task and process automation, which can make data handing much more efficient for the company. This may not be something that a company asks for directly in a job description, but it would certainly give you an edge over other people who apply for a role.

If you are hoping for a role in cloud computing, then the fact that there is currently a shortage of trained workers should be to your advantage. You may find that you need to undertake some more training in an area that you’re not entirely familiar with, however when you consider some of the job opportunities that are available, and the potential salaries that you could earn, you should find that it is worth it.
