The future of cloud computing in 2018

Oracle Cloud Day in Boston this year brought a huge amount of information and predictions with regards to cloud computing, and what 2018 might bring. It is thought that there are six possible routes that the technology may follow, and in a world where everything is changing so quickly, it is important that cloud computing is able to keep up – or it will no longer be a key player in the industry.

Speakers claimed that it is time to think of new ways to use the technology available, to ensure that cloud technology can stay up to date, and remain a safe and effective tool within the IT industry.

A huge shift

Experts believe that approximately every 20 years, there is a major shift in IT that decides exactly what the future of technology is going to look like. The most recent shift was in the 1990s when the internet became commonplace, and it now looks as though cloud computing is bringing the next shift.

The issue faced by businesses is the fact that the IT infrastructures that exist simply weren’t built with all of the newly available tech in mind, and current data centres don’t have the facility to be as elastic or flexible as innovative cloud technology demands. In order for businesses to thrive in this technology era, they need to transform their cloud service, and experts believe that there are six paths that could be taken in this respect.

The six paths

The path that is taken will depend on a number of things, including how old the company is, the current infrastructure, and its workload. The options are as follows:

- The company can improve their existing data centre which is on the premises, with the view of migrating later when needed.

- Set up an on-premises cloud infrastructure. This can be done behind the firewall, which gives added security, and the ability to pay for what you use.

- Any existing workloads could be moved into the cloud infrastructure.

- Cloud-resistant apps could be created to replace any outdated models currently in operation. This could make the most of a variety of open source languages, and the overall result would be that your business could be made easier to run.

- Use subscription based SaaS counterparts to replace your current core legacy. A positive aspect of this option is that apps can be developed and customised.

- A born in the cloud model, which is a good choice if the company you’re running is new.

Think about the customer

It is important that the overall customer experience is thought about. This means that IT professionals need to think about how a customer might experience the tech, and what could be done to improve this experience.

It is vital to learn about new tech as quickly as it emerges, or the company will run the risk of being left behind – which could be hugely damaging in the long term. It is only by being proactive that companies will ever be able to ensure that they are making the most of the tech that is available, and staying on top of developments within the industry.
