Predictions for data security in 2018

There have been a number of new and innovation cyber attacks in recent times, including the HBO attack which was responsible for leaking new Game of Thrones episodes, and the Wannacry attack where a number of different industries in various countries were targeted. The one thing that is for sure is the fact that cyber criminals are constantly finding new and innovative ways to breach security, and this has meant that organisations have had to sit up and take a good look at how their content is secured, and what they are doing to protect their own data. We have put together a few predictions for how things might develop in 2018.

Companies will rush to become GDPR compliant, and some US states will introduce their own regulations

From May 25th 2018, any company who uses data that belongs to EU residents will be governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If businesses do not comply with these rules, they may be fined anywhere up to 4% of what they make annually across the globe. Not only this, but they may find that their reputation is damaged in the industry. For this reason, it seems likely that there will be a rush for companies to make absolutely sure that they are acting within the law in this respect. There is an issue in that there is no absolute law, simply guidelines, meaning that companies themselves will have to decide what they need to do in order to be compliant. With this in mind, it is likely that many will struggle to be sure they’re doing the right thing – and it is likely to be those who have thus far failed to keep up with technological innovation that struggle the most.

There will be more data breaches

There have been lots of well reported breaches in 2017, and it is likely that this is set to continue. Companies are faced with the challenge of changing their security strategy, however many are failing to understand the importance of their content management – leaving them at risk of breaches.

The cloud will need to be made more secure

There is no doubt that there is a huge amount to be gained from the cloud, as it means that documents and data can be made available all over the world. However, with this comes a huge amount of risk, and with this in mind companies will need to make sure that their cloud provision is made as secure as possible. There is likely to be more evidence of private companies and Blue Chip tech players working together in an attempt to make the cloud more secure, and this should bring with it greater reassurance for companies choosing to use this technology.

The position of Chief Security Officer will be more greatly utilised

With more and more companies taking security as a serious issue – as it should be – they will come to realise that security isn’t just something that matters within the IT department. Instead, companies will most likely consider hiring a Chief Security Officer to deal with all issues within the workplace. This is more important than ever when you consider the fact that there is more tech being used in the workplace than ever before. A CSO will be able to oversee everything that is going on, in a way that ensures top security for all involved.
