How to hire (or get hired) in a candidate short market

We’re currently in a "candidate short market", which is exactly what it sounds like: a market that’s short of candidates.

Top performers are already employed, and businesses are waking up to the need to retain them. Meanwhile, those looking to hire them have a tough competition on their hands – and recruiters face the challenge of managing both candidate and client expectations.

So what does this mean for you as an employer, or as a candidate? Read on to find out how to make the best of this situation.

For the Candidate:

If there’s anything in your current role that you’d like to see changed – something that might drive you to look for another job – try talking to your employer about it. No matter how awkward the conversation is, in this market, they’re likely to listen and try to solve your issue rather than lose you.

If you do want to look for greener pastures, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can just stroll idly into a job, because that’s exactly what you’ll get: ‘a’ job, in a market where you have a real chance of getting your dream job. Work with a specialist recruiter who can help you make the most of your opportunities by presenting you in the best possible light and guiding you through the bewildering variety of options available.

Be honest with your recruiter or hiring manager about what’s in your interview pipeline, as it’ll affect how fast they move to the next stage.

For the Employer:

Be aware that your staff have a lot of opportunities out there and may already be considering them. Understand what makes your organisation a great place to work: how do you support career growth? What makes you unique? These are the qualities top performers will be looking for.

Ask yourself and your colleagues how engaged your high performers are. Check in with them and see how they’re doing. Find out if there’s anything you could do to make them happier. Ask them what their goals are and think about how you can work with them to achieve them.

If you’re interviewing, and you see a candidate you like, snap them up. Don’t wait until you’ve seen all the candidates. Don’t even wait for a face-to-face interview. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to lose them to a competitor.

For recruiters, even more than for candidates, it’s vital to work with a recruiter in a market like this. Not only will a recruiter be able to connect you with more and better talent – including top performers who aren’t actively looking and won’t respond to your job ad – we’ll also enable you to move much faster than you could alone. And in a market like this, if you don’t move fast to snap up the best candidates, you can bet that your competition will.

Whether you’re a client or a candidate, contact us today to find out how we can help you make the most of the current market.
